What’s within a Gift?
One thing we love most whenever a year ends is celebrating Christmas with the persons close to us. Usually it is the gathering of our loved ones; it is where we put ourselves away from our hectic job and just simply spend a short time free of worries. Breathe the air with the laughter of the children playing around the house or enjoy listening to the agreement of our elders boasting what they’ve been through all year. Appreciate all the sceneries of different colors of lights and calm ourselves down with the songs of Christmas played all over town. Just sit back, relax and wait until the food is ready and then prepare for the most awaited time — “The Gift Giving”!!!
Truly, we cannot deny that “gift” plays an important part in this occasion. It has been implanted sub consciously by our parents or elders, since we were young that Christmas should be with gifts just as when we say coffee should be with cream and pasta should be with garlic bread. One thing cannot be separated for it can never be complete without the other.
Traditionally, we tell children that Christmas gifts came from Santa Clause. That if they’ve been good boys or girls, they certainly will receive the gift they wanted most. Although this is one effective way for the parents or for the elders to make the children behave or do good things rather than doing bad things, it does not teach them the true meaning and importance of “gift”.
“True meaning of Gift”
Notice that it is “gift giving” and not “gift receiving”. We ask ourselves why we give gifts to others. Why do we give gifts not just on Christmas days but also in other special occasion days like birthdays and more? We even do give a gift when someone is hurt or ill. What is behind the meaning of “gift”?
Through giving a gift, it shows a symbol of kindness and love. That by giving “gift” to someone, we make them feel they belong in our hearts, and that they are important in our lives. It is like a magic spell cast on everyone; when they see the present they can’t help but smile back at you. That you can see in their gestures how thankful they are for the gift you gave them. You gave them love by giving a gift and in return they give you a hug or maybe a present to you as their way of showing their appreciation. With this, “love” is the true meaning of gift. By giving “gift” we also give “love”. However, we should always remember that when we give “gift”, it has to be with the right attitude or in other words, honesty and sincerity in our hearts. As Wayne Dyer explains that universe is like an echo, in the sense that whatever we do, it comes back the way on what we did—an echo. Just like a mirror in front of us, if we smile or make any happy attitude, we find the mirror reflecting the same attitude back to us. However, if we try to hold back, we see a reflection of holding back attitude in the mirror. Thus, if we give love partially, then we will receive a partial love in return.
“Importance of Gift”
What would make out of the good things we do if we don’t share it to everyone? What is the point of doing things that benefit everyone if no one would do the same? It is like giving love to others but others won’t do the same. We should set an example to everyone how to share the meaning of giving “gift” that by doing this; we give “love” to others. Let the people know the importance of “gift”, and that is the unending circle of sharing “love” to all people. In other words, it is an infinite love to the people around us. And by doing this sharing our love to others, we will surely bring joy to the hearts of men.
All in all, a “gift” is like a key that opens a man’s heart for that is that kind of a love. Once received, it can never be in comparison to anything in this world. It is something that we can never forget, which then makes it priceless. Life can be full of surprises but with the gift of love that brings happiness, it is the best gift of all.
